Targeted steel frames by means of innovative moment resisting connections
2021
Abstract The present paper proposes the use of stepped cross section devices on steel frames aiming at reproducing a pre-established target push-over curve. To this aim a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) to be inserted along selected structural members is proposed. The following two main specific features for LRPD are required: any elastic flexural stiffness variation of the original selected member must be avoided; an ultimate plastic bending moment value equal to an assigned percentage of the original limit resistance value must be ensured. Steel frames equipped with LRPD are modeled by means of an extension of a recently proposed Fibre Smart Displacement Based (FSDB) beam element…
On the long-term response of elastic-perfectly plastic solids to dynamic cyclic loads
1992
It is shown that the long-term response of an elastic-perfectly plastic solid subjected to dynamic actions cyclically varying in time is characterized by stresses, plastic strain rates and velocities that are all periodic with the same period of the external actions, and are in perfect analogy with the quasi-static case; on the other hand, plastic strains and displacements are in general nonperiodic (except in case of alternating plasticity) and may increase indefinitely (except when elastic or plastic shakedown occurs). Besides, the work performed by the external actions in the steady cycle equals the work performed by the elastic stresses (i.e. pertaining to the elastic response of the bo…
Size effects on the plastic collapse limit load of thin foils in bending and thin wires in torsion
2011
Abstract Following a previous paper by the author [Strain gradient plasticity, strengthening effects and plastic limit analysis, Int. J. Solids Struct. 47 (2010) 100–112], a nonconventional plastic limit analysis for a particular class of micron scale structures as, typically, thin foils in bending and thin wires in torsion, is here addressed. An idealized rigid-perfectly plastic material is considered, which is featured by a strengthening potential degree-one homogeneous function of the effective plastic strain and its spatial gradient. The nonlocal (gradient) nature of the material resides in the inherent strengthening law, whereby the yield strength is related to the effective plastic st…
Bounds on transient phase plastic deformations in optimal design of steel frames subjected to cyclic loads
2009
A minimum volume multicriterion design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to a combination of quasi-static fixed and cyclic loads, bounding the transient phase plastic deformations, is proposed. The problem is formulated according to a plastic shakedown criterion, so that incremental and instantaneous collapse are certainly prevented when the frame is subjected to very strongly amplified cyclic loads. The further condition that the structure must also behave elastically in serviceability conditions is imposed. Since the steady-state loading history is known it is possible to directly bound the steady-state plastic deformations. By applying a suitable own bounding theorem, i…
An approach to evaluation of sheet bending force under successive multiaxial stress condition
2009
A new bending under tension test is presented in this paper. This method tries to evaluate bending forces in sheet under successive multiaxial stress condition. This test is carried out in only one step with a pinned cylinder over a material that has been previously deformed to pure shear condition. Due to that, the bending process is made under higher back tension forces than the ones involved in the common methods previously studied in the literature. This entails high pressure values in the sheet-bending tool contact that affects the corresponding friction process. Material is strongly strengthened as a consequence of the deformation practiced in it, and as a result of that, bending forc…
Changes in surface stress, morphology and chemical composition of silica and silicon nitride surfaces during the etching by gaseous HF acid
2007
Abstract HF acid attack of SiO2 and Si3N4 substrates is analyzed to improve the sensitivity of a sensor based on microcantilever. Ex situ analysis of the etching using XPS, SIMS and AFM show significant changes in the anisotropy and the rate of the etching of the oxides on SiO2 and Si3N4 surface. Those differences influence the kinetic evolution of the plastic bending deflection of the cantilever coated with SiO2 and Si3N4 layer, respectively. The linear dependence between the HF concentration and the Si3N4 cantilever bending corresponds to a deep attack of the layer whereas the non-linear behavior observed for SiO2 layer can be explained by a combination of deep and lateral etching. The ca…
Bounds on plastic strains for elastic plastic structures in plastic shakedown conditions
2007
The problem related to the computation of bounds on plastic deformations for structures in plastic shakedown condition (alternating plasticity) is studied. In particular, reference is made to structures discretized by finite elements constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material and subjected to a special combination of fixed and cyclic loads. The load history is known during the steady-state phase, but it is unknown during the previous transient phase; so, as a consequence, it is not possible to know the complete elastic plastic structural response. The interest is therefore focused on the computation of bounds on suitable measures of the plastic strain which characterizes just the fir…
